Board Policy with Guidelines

Subject: Entrance Age for Public Schools

BOARD POLICY

The North Sanpete School Board of Education is cognizant that developmental

readiness is closely related to maturation. In spite of individual variations, most

children are ready for formal instruction at a similar enough time to permit

teaching to be directed to groups of children.

ENROLLMENT GUIDELINES FOR GRADES K-12

1. Utah state law permits only those children who reach the age of 5 on or

before September 1st of the given school year to enter public school that

year.

2. Typically, these children will be placed in Kindergarten.

3. If there is a question of a student being placed in a different grade, parents

must request assessment of the child's ability and achievement levels, by

contacting Student Services at the district office.

4. Results of such an assessment will be discussed with parents, teacher,

school psychologist and principal. At this meeting, the appropriate grade

placement will be determined.

ENROLLMENT GUIDELINES FOR PRESCHOOL

1. Entry into North Sanpete School District Preschool shall be determined

by chronological age. Children must be 3 or 4 on or before September

1st of the given school year to be accepted.

2. Students entering preschool must show a certified copy of a birth

certificate and immunization records. A physical examination including

a vision screening is recommended.

3. Entrance during the school year will be made available to children that

participate in early intervention programs. Students that may require

special education services will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

ENROLLMENT PRIORITY

1. An application for enrollment may be submitted for any 3- or 4-

year-old child; however, enrollment is based on priority seating. We

first serve:

   a. Students eligible for special education services

   b. At-risk students (free or reduced lunch + 1 or more risk

factors as determined by a risk factors assessment OR an

       English Language Learner)

   c. Students that qualify for free or reduced lunch only

   d. 4-year-old tuition

   e. 3-year-old tuition

2. Buses will be provided according to NSSD policy for K-12 students.

3. Children placed on the waitlist will be accepted on a first come first

served basis.

4. Children must be toilet trained to enter preschool unless the

student has been identified as a student with special needs.
