District Commitment:
Creating conditions for learning, so
all students can succeed.
NSSD uses Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) which is a state supported behavior (management? Program?) framework. As a component of this framework, behavioral expectations for every area (or environment, setting) of the school are proactively taught and reinforced with all students and staff regularly throughout the school year.
NSSD is committed to protecting students from all forms of bullying including cyber-bullying, hazing and retaliation. Our students have the right to a safe, caring, and respectful learning environment in which all students can realize their maximum potential and fully engage in the learning process. Our goal is to raise awareness of bullying as an unacceptable form of behavior (prevention) and to have measures in place to deal with bullying behavior when it occurs (intervention).
Understanding the issues concerning suicide and mental health is an important way to take part in suicide prevention, help others in crisis, and change the conversation around suicide. NSSD uses age-appropriate curriculum to teach students how to identify risk factors and warning signs of suicide, and how to help if they or someone they know may be thinking of self-harm. Reports of suicidal ideation are reported to administration to provide supports and communication to student and family.
NSSD is committed to the prevention of drug, alcohol, tobacco, and E-cigarettes/vaping use by our students and are aware of the connection and affect these have on physical and mental health and on learning. A key component to minimizing substance abuse is INCREASING protective factors and REDUCING risk factors in a student’s life. NSSD teaches, and reinforces substances abuse prevention and corrects substance abuse violations as outlined in the district substance abuse policy.
An important part of the district’s Positive Behavior Plan is the role of the Student Support Team (SST). The SST in each school meets regularly and reviews applicable schoolwide student behavior and/or academic data from PowerSchool MTSS and teacher input. This team works to identify students and/or groups of students who need additional levels of behavior and/or academic support and interventions. Below is a list of Tier II (focused supports) and Tier III (intensive supports) interventions used in NSSD.
This plan is reviewed annually and made available on the NSSD website at the beginning of each school year.

The Standard Response Protocol was developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation. The protocols are used in over 30,000 schools and municipalities nationwide. They were created through research-based best practices of school administrators, psychologists, public safety experts, families, and first responders. The Standard Response Protocol creates common and consistent language among educators, communities, and first responding agencies.
North Sanpete School District incorporates Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). This trauma-informed practice guides educators and parents in implementing principles of connection, empowerment, and correction for our students. The districts’ TBRI practitioners provide monthly training to support stakeholders in implementing evidence-based, best practices related to connecting with students, empowering students to be successful, and addressing the need behind problematic behaviors. Participants complete a series of trainings over the course of 18+ hours. Below are pictures from our latest cohort.
June 2024, TBRI was taught and implemented in a 3-day Family Camp. TBRI trained teachers and staff teamed up with Raise the Future, a non-profit TBRI ambassador, to provide families to experience TBRI through activities for the children and training to caregivers.
