Subject: Leave of Absence

BOARD POLICY

The policy of North Sanpete School District is to encourage employees to avoid absenteeism and to schedule vacations, trips, and other personal activities at times that do not interrupt work schedules. However, the District recognizes that circumstances may make it necessary for employees to request a short-term leave of absence.

GUIDELINES

  1. In the event that an employee has a serious or compelling need for a leave of absence, a Statement of Absence form will be completed and submitted to the employees immediate supervisor at least five (5) days prior to the date of the anticipated leave. In the case of an emergency, notification of the immediate supervisor will suffice until the Statement of Absence can be completed.
  2. Leaves of absence under this policy are without pay and will not be granted until all other appropriate leave benefits are exhausted.
  3. Employees will not be granted more than fifteen (IS) days' leave of absence under this policy in any given three year period. Emergency situations will be considered when all leave is exhausted.
  4. An employee whose request for an unpaid leave of absence is denied and chooses to absent himself/herself from his/her assignment will be deemed to have voluntarily terminated his/her employment with the district.
  5. This policy does not negate the other official leave provisions of the District and/or any rights that an employee may have under state and federal law:
  • Sick Leave
  • Personal Leave
  • Bereavement Leave
  • Military Leave
  • Jury Duty
  • Approved Professional Development
  • Special Paid Leave of Absence
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Note: Emergency situations are by definition: unexpected, unanticipated, unforeseen or unplanned situations, conditions, circumstances or events that come about without warning, usually beyond the control of individuals or organizations, that require prompt action.
