DISTRICT POLICY

It is the philosophy of the district that students will respond more positively to the opportunity for success than to the threat of failure. It seeks, therefore, through instructional objectives to make achievement both recognizable and possible for students. It emphasizes achievement in its processes of evaluating student performance. And it reports achievement through the use of symbols.

GUIDELINES

  1. The issuance of grades on a regular basis serves to promote a process of continuous evaluation of student performance, to inform the student, his parents, and his counselor of his progress, and to provide a basis for bringing about change in student performance, if such change seems necessary.
  2. Copies of course objectives will be distributed at the beginning of each course. Teachers will take time to explain to students the levels of mastery within the course. The teacher is obligated to make clear to the students, at appropriate intervals, the basis upon which the grades are assigned. Marks should be given on the basis of a student's success in achieving established objectives of the course. Further, students should be encouraged to write their own evaluations based on the course objectives. These self-evaluations should be reviewed by the teacher and returned to the students with written comments during periodic conferences.
