BOARD POLICY


At the time of the death of a close relative, it is often desirable that employees attend the funeral and to assist with the necessary arrangements. The Board of Education is sensitive to this need of its employees.

GUIDELINES


1. An employee may take up to three (3) days of bereavement leave each for close family member who resides in the same household as the employee as well as spouse, child, brother, sister, parent, grandparents, the employee's spouse's brother, sister, parent, grandparents.


2. An employee may take one day of bereavement for uncle, aunt, cousin and other in-laws.


3. In the event the employee must travel out of state, upon prior approval of the principal and the superintendent or the assistant administrator over personnel, an extra day may be taken. This would only be under unusual circumstances.


4. All bereavement leave must have prior approval.


5. Bereavement leave shall be deducted from the accumulated sick leave.


6. If additional time is needed beyond the authorized time of the policy, the employee, upon consultation with their immediate supervisor and upon approval of the superintendent or human resource director, may take additional time with the additional time being deducted from their available sick leave. If sick days are not available for additional days, these days will be deducted from their salary. This would only be under extremely unusual circumstances.


7. The employee must attend the funeral to be eligible for bereavement leave.


8. The Board recognizes that number one may not cover other relatives and close friends. Therefore, the Principals of the school and the Superintendent shall be permitted to waive the provisions of number one. This shall be on rare occasions.
