NSSD Mission

NSSD Foundation

Greetings,

April may be filled with showers, but it is also filled with national and district recognitions as well.  During this month we draw attention to our support for child abuse prevention, honor the children of our military, thank our school librarians, administrative assistants, and school volunteers. April is also the month we select a teacher of the year from each school as well as the district teacher of the year.  As you can imagine, this is a difficult task.  We are fortunate to have schools filled with dedicated and exceptional teachers. This year’s recipients will be recognized during the Board meeting to be held this Tuesday, April 20th.  You are welcome to join the meeting by Zoom.  The request for the link is available on the district website.

This month is also the time begin many of our state assessments.  Teachers work to make this a positive part of the school routine and your partnership in making this happen is appreciated. You can help by maintaining a daily routine of healthy eating and getting ample sleep.  With the warmer weather arriving, all of us need activity and sunshine.  Your students are resilient and jump in to do their part and we feel fortunate to care for them each day.  Thank you.

Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year is scheduled for the last week of school (May 24th to May 27th).  It is important that we obtain an accurate list of all qualifying children.  If you have a child turning five years of age on or before September 1, 2021, he or she qualifies for next year’s kindergarten program.  If your child qualifies, please contact your local elementary school to make sure they are on the enrollment list.

As you plan ahead, keep in mind that the last day of school is Friday, May 28th.  This is short day with school ending at 11:30 a.m.  This last week of school is filled with celebrations as our students transition from grade to grade or walk to receive their diploma.  I will be right there to cheer them on.

Celebrations in April are plentiful.  So, in honor of all those celebrations and the fact that it is National Poetry Month, I end this message to you with a poem from my favorite poet, Billy Collins.

Be safe and enjoy your week,
Nan

Today

If ever there were a spring day so perfect
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary’s cage,
indeed, rip the little door from it jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into the larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.
