STAR READING - Do you have a couple of free hours during the week? We are looking for great community members willing to work one-on-one tutoring a student with reading. STAR volunteers are trained to help students develop reading skills that help them throughout their education and future. If you would like the chance to mentor a student and develop a friendship that will last a lifetime, please contact Cheryl Swapp, 469-0482 or call the office at school, 427-9204.

EAT LUNCH WITH YOUR KIDS - We will be celebrating National School Lunch Week on Tuesday, October 11. Families are invited to come and eat school lunch with their children. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the delicious and nutritious food prepared by our wonderful lunch staff. We will be serving Hamburger Gravy and Mashed Potatoes. Lunch is $3.50 for adults and $1.75 for children. Please fill out the form that is being sent home today. Return the form to the school by Thursday, October 6th so we can make sure to prepare enough food for everyone to enjoy. This is a great time to connect with your children during lunch.

END OF 1ST QUARTER - The beginning of school has gone by fast and furious! The 1st quarter ends on October 14th. Please help your student keep up on their work by asking them about their school. Make sure you check their backpack for homework and notes. Set time aside for your student to complete required homework and reading each night. If you are not sure about what is expected of your student, email your child's teacher. Communication is vital to the success of our students. If your student is in 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade, check PowerSchool regularly. Teachers work hard to keep grades and assignments up to date. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held October 25-26. You will receive an appointment time soon. Together we are here to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

ROAD TO SUCCESS - We are excited to participate in Road to Success again this year. The Success in Education Foundation is a public charity founded in August 2011 in collaboration with the Governor's Commission on Literacy. The commission's goal is to build good reading habits by challenging students to read every day to increase literacy and prepare them for post-secondary education. When students turn in their reading calendars to their classroom teacher, the school will enter the number of minutes read each week. Keep reading everyone.

HALLOWEEN PARADE - Halloween is on a Monday and early out day for the school. We are asking that all students come to school dressed in their costumes  Monday morning. We will serve brunch at 10:30 am. The parade will be begin at 11:30 am down main street. Students will be excused at 1:00 pm.

FALL WEATHER - The weather has definitely changed this week. Please make sure your students are dressed for the colder weather. Send them with socks and shoes and a jacket or coat each day. Students are outside for recess three different times during the day. They need the fresh air and chance to exercise their bodies. We want them to be warm and comfortable while playing outside. Thanks for your help!

HELPING CHILDREN AT HOME - UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE READING - So many children read something without remembering what they've read or understanding what is means. To aid in that gap to learning, children should know that when reading, they should not go to the  next paragraph in their reading until they have understood what they have already read; if they do, they usually won't understand the next paragraph, either. You should also teach children to take notes on what they read (or, better yet, to outline what they have read). Taking notes and writing outlines reinforces what the student has learned from reading and will allow the student to be better prepared for written examinations. We don't expect children to take notes on everything they read.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY - Thank you to all who participated in Walk to School Day. We had over 200 students walk or ride their bikes to school that day. Parents and even some dogs joined in on the fun. The PTA provided fruit snacks and music outside before school started to all who participated. We had so much fun that we forgot to take pictures!
